Scholarships Promote Diversity in Legal Profession

Two multicultural students learned this week that they have been selected for scholarships from the Idaho State Bar’s Diversity Section. The students plan to study law and were given up to $1,200 each.

To qualify, recipients must sit for the September 2018 or December 2018 Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and must apply for admission to a law school in Idaho. Each scholarship covers the LSAT study course, LSAT test fee, and law school application fee.

The Diversity Section promotes diversity, equality, and cultural understanding throughout the Idaho State Bar to better serve the state’s diverse citizenry. The scholarship is named in honor of Jennifer King who spent the last years of her life working to increase access to legal study for diverse students hoping to increase the diversity of the Idaho State Bar.

The 2018-2019 Jennifer King Memorial Law School Application Scholarship recipients are:

  • Dulce Sanchez of Caldwell – a 2015 graduate of the College of Idaho, earning a Bachelor of Arts, Sanchez excelled academically and had an active role on campus serving as President of the Association of Latin American Students, a member of the Pre-Law Club and a founding member of the statewide Mexican-American Escaramuza Drill Team (Mexican Cowgirls Team). Sanchez’s career goal is to become an immigration attorney and become part of the legislative branch in Idaho.

 

  • Herve Mashindora of Boise – a student at the University of Idaho in Moscow majoring in International Studies with a minor in Political Science, Mashindora plays club soccer for the Vandals and is employed as a work study by the Martin Institute. A Christian refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mashindora is a first-generation college student with the ability to speak multiple languages including French, Swahili, English, and Kirundi. Law school will provide Mashindora the opportunity to fulfill his goal of practicing immigration law.

Fifth District Contested Judicial Election Survey Results

2018 Contested Fifth District Judicial Election – Attorney Survey Results

BOISE – The Idaho State Bar recently conducted a survey of its members on the qualifications of candidates for the contested Fifth District Court Judge position. The four candidates are Samuel S. Beus, Theodore Booth, David W. Gadd and Roger B. Harris.

The Idaho State Bar does not interpret or express any opinion about the attached results and makes no endorsements. Of the 5,273 Idaho attorneys and judges sent the survey, 178 responded between April 9 and April 20.  Attorneys were asked to rate a candidate only if they have personal and/or professional experience with the candidate.

The ISB membership passed a resolution in 2003 that requested a survey be developed for contested judicial elections. A committee of lawyers and judges developed the four-question survey and the ISB has conducted the survey for every contested judicial election since 2006.

The survey rates candidates on four criteria:

1). Integrity and Independence

2). Knowledge and Understanding of the Law

3). Judicial Temperament and Demeanor

4). Legal Ability and Experience.

Idaho State Bar Diversity Section Announces Love The Law! Jennifer King Memorial Application Scholarship

Boise, Idaho-April 3, 2018 – For the fifth consecutive year, the Idaho State Bar Diversity Section’s Love the Law! program will begin accepting applications for the Jennifer King Memorial Application Scholarship on Monday, April 2, 2018.

Named in honor of the late Jennifer King, this scholarship memorializes Jennifer’s commitment to encouraging and acknowledging Bar members who reflect Idaho’s great diversity and strength. Jennifer was a member of the Idaho State Bar and a leader in the Diversity Section. She was a talented and able lawyer, passionate about bolstering diversity in the legal profession. Jennifer championed the goals of increased diversity among the ranks of lawyers and judges throughout the state of Idaho, as well as working to attract students of diverse backgrounds to study the rule of law. Within the Diversity Section and in her tireless efforts to support the various Love the Law! programs, Jennifer was an example for every section member to emulate.

This scholarship in her honor is available to students applying to a law school located in Idaho. Additionally, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and sit for the September or November 2018 LSAT. Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of approximately $1,200 to pay for the LSAT study course, test fees and Idaho law school application fees.

The application will be available beginning Monday, April 2, 2018 with a final deadline of 5:00 p.m. MDT / 4:00 p.m. PDT on Friday, May 4, 2018.

Scholarships will be awarded by Friday, May 25, 2018 and recipients will be contacted accordingly.

Idaho High School Mock Trial Program Hosting State Competition in Boise

On Wednesday through Friday, March 21 to 23, the Idaho Law Foundation’s Law Related Education Program will be hosting the Idaho High School Mock Trial Championship. 12 teams qualified during three regional competitions held in February and early March. The following schools will be participating:

  • The Ambrose School (Two teams; Meridian)
  • Centennial High School (Meridian)
  • Century High School (Pocatello)
  • Helena High School (Helena, Montana; two teams)
  • Lewiston High School (Two teams)
  • The Logos School (Two teams; Moscow)
  • Moscow High School
  • Mountain Home High School

In addition to the Mock Trial Competition, the Law Foundation will also be hosting the 6th Annual Courtroom Artist Contest. Six students from all parts of the state will be participating. The winning mock trial team and artist will represent Idaho at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in May.

Bruce Owens Appointed to Idaho Judicial Council

BOISE – The Idaho State Bar Board of Commissioners has selected attorney R. Bruce Owens of Hayden to serve a six-year term on the Idaho Judicial Council to replace Joel Hazel of Coeur d’Alene. The appointment is subject to the consent of the Idaho State Senate.

Mr. Owens practices law at Owens, McCrea & Linscott, PLLC in Hayden, and has a specialization certificate in civil litigation from the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association and the Idaho State Bar. He has tried cases in all seven judicial districts. Owens has served as president of both the Idaho Law Foundation, Inc. and the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association. Mr. Owens has also served as a member of the American Association of Justice and the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association.

The Idaho Judicial Council nominates persons for appointments to the Idaho Supreme Court, Idaho Court of Appeals, and district courts.

In its disciplinary capacity, the Council may investigate complaints against justices, court of appeals judges or judges of the district courts or magistrate divisions, and members of the Industrial Commission. In appropriate cases it may recommend to the Supreme Court the removal, discipline or retirement of a justice, judge, or magistrate judge who have violated the Code of Judicial Conduct.

There are six permanent members of the Idaho Judicial Council. Three are appointed by the Idaho State Bar and three are appointed by the governor. The Chief Justice of the Idaho Supreme Court serves as ex-officio chairman of the Council and one magistrate judge serves as an adjunct member. In addition to Mr. Owens, the Bar’s appointees are: Reed Larsen, Pocatello, and the Hon. Tom Ryan, Caldwell. The Governor’s appointees are: Philip Reberger, Boise; Elizabeth Chavez, Lewiston; and Kathy Simpson, Idaho Falls.
