The 2019 licensing deadline is February 1, 2019.  Payments not physically received in the Idaho State Bar Office by the deadline must be accompanied by the licensing late fee:  $100 for active and house counsel members; $25 for inactive, senior and emeritus members.  Please note that postmarks do not qualify as meeting the deadline.  The street address for overnight deliveries is 525 W. Jefferson Street, Boise, Idaho 83702. Attorneys who have not paid are encouraged to use Online Licensing Renewal. Questions may be directed to the Licensing Department at (208) 334-4500.

South-Central Idaho attorneys & judge receive awards at the Fifth District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 7, 2018-The Idaho State Bar will present two awards to South-Central Idaho attorneys and will recognize one judge at the Fifth District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 8. The meeting will be held at Blue Lakes Country Club, 1940 Blue Lakes Grade in Twin Falls, beginning at 6:00 pm.

  • Leon Smith of Twin Falls will receive the Professionalism Award. He will be celebrating 50 years as an Idaho attorney in 2019. The Washburn University graduate is a former Idaho legislator, former Idaho Transportation Board chairman, former mayor of Twin Falls and former prosecutor for Twin Falls County. Mr. Smith is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Twin Falls Chamber of Commerce, past Board President of YMCA Twin Falls and volunteer for the Idaho Foundation for Parks and Lands. He has mentored children in the Magic Valley’s Mentor Program designed for children with a parent in prison.

  • Former Ketchum Mayor Edward Simon will be receiving the Denise O’Donnell Day Pro Bono Award. He was nominated for his tireless legal work on a custody case involving a mother and five children. He ranks the case as his most rewarding and keeps a photograph of the family in his office to remind him of the experience. Mr. Simon graduated from New York University School of Law and has been admitted to practice law in Idaho for 40 years.

  • The Honorable Thomas H. Borresen will be recognized by the Bar for his dedication and service as a Magistrate Judge in Jerome County. Judge Borresen retired earlier this year. A graduate of the University of Idaho College of Law, Judge Borresen was admitted into the Idaho State Bar in 1975.

Southeastern Idaho attorneys receive awards at the Sixth District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 7, 2018-The Idaho State Bar will recognize three Southeastern Idaho attorneys at the Sixth District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 8. The meeting will be held at Juniper Hills Country Club, 6600 Bannock Highway in Pocatello, beginning at Noon.

  • Albert Matsuura will receive the Professionalism Award posthumously. Mr. Matsuura passed away in August 2018. Former Idaho State Bar President Kent Higgins had notified Mr. Matsuura of this recognition in May 2018. Prior to his death, Mr. Matsuura was the managing partner of Goicoechea Law Offices in Pocatello. He was past president of the Sixth District Bar Association and past chairperson of the Bar’s Workers Compensation Section. In 2010, he was bestowed the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association’s Walter H. Bithell Professionalism Award. A University of Idaho College of Law graduate, Mr. Matsurra was admitted to practice law in Idaho in 1985.

  • Jared A. Steadman will receive the Denise O’Donnell Day Pro Bono Award. Steadman has worked for Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Idaho for the last three years and he credits his company’s commitment to community service as one of the main reasons he donates his time to legal causes. Mr. Steadman is active with the Sixth Judicial District Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program. He keeps at least one CASA case open at all times and takes on other pro bono matters when the need arises. Mr. Steadman graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law and was admitted to practice law in Idaho in 2007.

  • Retired Pocatello attorney Archibald W. Service will be recognized for his 65 year anniversary of admission into the Idaho State Bar. He was admitted to practice law on October 5, 1953. In 2003, Mr. Service received the Idaho State Bar Professionalism Award and in 2012 he received the Distinguished Lawyer Award. He is a graduate of the University of Idaho College of Law.

Eastern Idaho attorneys & judges receive awards at the Seventh District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 7, 2018-The Idaho State Bar will present three awards to Eastern Idaho attorneys and will recognize two judges at the Seventh District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting scheduled for Friday, November 9. The meeting will be held at the Marriott Residence Inn, 635 W. Broadway Street in Idaho Falls, beginning at Noon.

  • James C. Arnold with the Law Firm of Petersen, Parkinson & Arnold will receive the Professionalism Award. Mr. Arnold has dedicated his career to helping injured people by protecting their legal rights. An active member of the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association, Mr. Arnold is a certified Worker’s Compensation Specialist. He has been a member of the Idaho Industrial Commission Advisory Committee and is a fellow of the National College of Workers’ Compensation Attorneys. He graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law and in 1987 was admitted to practice law in Idaho.

  • Alan F. Johnston is an Idaho Falls native who has been practicing law for 10 years. He will be receiving the Denise O’Donnell Day Pro Bono Award. Mr. Johnston is with the Law Firm of Murray Ziel & Johnston, PLLC. He tries to have at least one pro bono case on his desk at all times. Most recently, he represented a domestic violence survivor in her custody case and also represented a man in an administrative law matter. Mr. Johnston is a graduate of the University of Idaho College of Law.

  • Retired attorney Herman Larry Spilker of Ammon will be recognized for his 50 year anniversary of admission into the Idaho State Bar. He was admitted to practice law on September 27, 1968. Mr. Spilker is a graduate of the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law.
  • The Honorable Stephen J. Clark will be recognized by the Bar for his dedication and service as a Seventh District Magistrate Judge in Lemhi County. Judge Clark retired earlier this year. A graduate of the University of Idaho College of Law, Judge Clark was admitted into the Idaho State Bar in 1982.
  • The Honorable Alan C. Stephens will be recognized by the Bar for his dedication and service as a Seventh Judicial District Judge. Judge Stephens retired earlier this year. A graduate of the University of Idaho College of Law, Judge Stephens was admitted into the Idaho State Bar in 1978.

Western Treasure Valley attorneys receive awards at the Third District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 2, 2018-The Idaho State Bar will present three awards to Western Treasure Valley attorneys at the Third District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 7. The meeting will be held at Brick 29, 320 11th Ave. S., in Nampa, beginning at 5:30 pm.

  • Matthew J. Roker of Caldwell will receive the Professionalism Award. Roker is a partner in the Law Firm of Lovan, Roker & Rounds.  A native of Eastern Idaho, Roker graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law and was admitted into the Idaho State Bar in 1994. Mr. Roker’s practice area focus includes criminal defense and juvenile court matters. He is a member of the Idaho Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

  • Alexander Spayd of Caldwell will receive the Denise O’Donnell Day Pro Bono Award. Upon admission into the Idaho State Bar in 2016, Mr. Spayd contacted the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program and took pro bono cases. Just days before Christmas 2017, Mr. Spayd agreed to assist a disabled man in the middle of eviction proceeding set for trial on January 5. He settled the case for the client on the courthouse steps. In another case, he served as guardian ad litem for three children whose mother was addicted to drugs. His representation ensured the kids could remain with their grandmother. A graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law, Mr. Spayd is an attorney for the Canyon County Public Defender’s Office.

  • Retired Nampa attorney Reese E. Verner will be recognized for his 50 year anniversary of admission into the Idaho State Bar. He was admitted to practice law on May 14, 1968. In 2000, Mr. Verner received the Idaho State Bar Professionalism Award and in 2015 he received recognition for his lifetime commitment to pro bono services. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law.

Treasure Valley attorneys & judges receive awards at the Fourth District Bar Resolution Meeting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 2, 2018-The Idaho State Bar will present six awards to Treasure Valley attorneys and judges at the Fourth District Bar Annual Resolution Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 7. The meeting will be held at Barber Park Event Center, 4049 S. Eckert Rd. in Boise, beginning at Noon.

  • Elam & Burke attorney William G. Dryden will receive the Professionalism Award. Mr. Dryden, a graduate of Willamette University College of Law, will be celebrating 40 years as an Idaho attorney in 2019. A Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, Mr. Dryden’s practice areas include commercial litigation, construction, insurance, labor & employment, product liability defense and professional errors & omissions. He is a member of the Idaho Association of Defense Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel and Inns of Court #130.
  • Former Idaho State Bar President Deborah A. Ferguson will receive the Professionalism Award. Ms. Ferguson is an accomplished litigator with 30 years of experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in complex civil cases. She is with Ferguson Durham, PLLC, focusing on civil rights and constitutional cases, environmental federal challenges, complex torts and property rights. Ms. Ferguson is the founding Chair of the Idaho Academy of Leadership for Lawyers and recipient of the Idaho Women Lawyer’s Kate Feltham Award, the Federal Bar Association Idaho Chapter’s Exemplary Service Award and the ACLU of Idaho’s Dave Judy Civil Rights Service Award. She was admitted into the Idaho State Bar in 2000 and is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
  • Walter Sinclair will receive the Professionalism Award. He has served as a Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representative to the U.S. District Court of Idaho, an officer for Idaho Legal History, Inc. and President of the Idaho Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Of Counsel with Holland & Hart, Mr. Sinclair’s trial work has an emphasis on business, corporate, insurance coverage, mass tort, real estate and securities litigation. He is a Fellow for the American Bar Association Foundation and the American College of Trial Lawyers. His volunteer service to his community includes leadership roles with Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Idaho Community Foundation, Learning Lab and American Heart Association. Mr. Sinclair is a University of Idaho College of Law and a member of its Law School Advisory Council. He has been practicing law in Idaho for 40 years.

  • Sean Breen, a University of Idaho College of Law graduate and partner in the Law Firm of Manweiler, Breen, Ball & Davis, PLLC, will receive the Denise O’Donnell Day Pro Bono Award. A military officer with a strong commitment to serving his country, Mr. Breen is a regular volunteer at the Idaho Trial Lawyer’s Association’s Street Law Clinic, which provides much needed legal assistance to the Boise Community. He was nominated for the award after donating 200 hours of his time representing an Iraqi refugee who is a domestic violence survivor in a contested divorce and custody case. Mr. Breen was admitted into the Idaho State Bar in 1993.
  • Family law practitioner Cathy L. Naugle, Merris & Naugle, PLLC, will receive the Denise O’Donnell Day Pro Bono Award. Throughout her 38-year career as an Idaho attorney, Naugle has dedicated herself to providing free legal services to those unable to pay for representation. Most recently, Naugle, a former family law judge and University of Idaho College of Law graduate, donated 200 hours of her time on a custody modification case. The client was seeking a custody modification based on the opposing party’s willful neglect of the children, who suffered from various mental health conditions that required adherence to a medication schedule and close supervision.
  • Lisa D. Nordstrom is legal counsel for Idaho Power Company. The Lewis & Clark Law School graduate volunteers for a variety of organizations that support children and law-related education. She serves on the Board of Family Advocates, Inc., the Fourth Judicial District’s Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program and as a volunteer attorney for CASA guardian ad litems. Ms. Nordstrom was admitted into the Idaho State Bar twenty years ago.

  • Idaho Court of Appeals Judge Jessica M. Lorello of Boise will receive an Idaho State Bar Service Award. Judge Lorello is the co-chair and founding member of Attorneys for Civic Education whose mission supports civic education programs including high school mock trial competitions, We the People, and Youth in Government. The immediate past vice-chairperson of the Idaho State Bar’s Appellate Practice Section, Judge Lorello provided pro bono legal services for cases related to the Violence Against Women Act as a private attorney. She also volunteered at the Boise Senior Center free legal clinic.

Service Awards are given each year to lawyers and non-lawyers for exemplary service to the Idaho State Bar and/or Idaho Law Foundation.

  • The Honorable L. Kevin Swain will be recognized by the Bar for his dedication and service as a Magistrate Judge in Ada County. Judge Swain retired earlier this year. A graduate of the University of Idaho College of Law, Judge Swain was admitted into the Idaho State Bar in 1986.
