The Seventh District Bar Association is pleased to announce and open the application process to accept students for this year’s 2017 Citizens’ Law Academy (CLA).
The CLA is an adult education program offered free to attendees, and is coordinated by the Idaho Law Foundation’s Law Related Education Program in collaboration with our Seventh District Bar Association which includes the following ten (10) counties: Bingham, Bonneville, Butte, Custer, Jefferson, Madison, Clark, Fremont, Lemhi, and Teton Counties. The purpose of the CLA is to educate others as to their rights under the law, discover what lawyers do and how they serve the public, and understand how the judicial system works.
The CLA is open to anyone eighteen (18) years or older, who have a high level of interest in our program. All applicants must fill out an application. Typically, thirty-five (35) people participate in the Academy each year. Seating will quickly fill. The CLA program itself is staffed by volunteers from the legal community. This year’s presenters include: a. Seventh Judicial District Administrative Judge Darren Simpson; b. Bonneville County Prosecuting Attorney Daniel Clark and Curtis Smith a Criminal Defense attorney in private practice of the firm of Thompson Smith Woolf Anderson Wilkinson & Birch; c. Judge Jim D. Pappas, United States Bankruptcy Judge, District of Idaho; d. Judge Randy Smith, United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit; e. Marvin Smith private practice attorney of the firm Hawley Troxel with Craig Simpson private practice attorney with Westmark Credit Union;
f. Seventh Judicial District Judge Gregory Moeller; g. Brent Hill, President Pro Tempore of the Idaho Senate. The classes will be held in the Centennial Courtroom of the Bonneville County Courthouse, located at 605 North Capital Avenue, Idaho Falls, Idaho. The classes begin on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 and will continue for seven (7) weeks, with classes being held on each Wednesday thereafter. The Academy’s last class will be on November 1, 2017, with graduation held thereafter. The classes run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights. Refreshments are served after each class.
All citizens of these 10 counties are encouraged to apply. This is an exclusive and unique experience to be able to be educated and discuss legal matters with the most prominent judges and attorneys in the state of Idaho.
