Access to Justice Idaho Stories

Living Independently

Taylor Mossman-Fletcher is a volunteer for the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program. This is where she met Alex. His case was immediately compelling to Taylor. She felt she needed to do everything she could to help him. And she did! Because of Taylor, Alex now has access to the benefits he needs to live independently.

When asked if there was anything she’d like to share about the value of offering pro bono services to people like Alex, who need help but can’t afford a lawyer, Taylor said, “I think everyone involved in Alex’s case is better off for having been involved. I know the purpose of my involvement was to help Alex with his legal needs, but in the end, I feel I gained more. Obviously, there was some satisfaction in getting a favorable outcome for him. But the bigger satisfaction came from my interactions with him and the inspiring people in his life that have worked to help him along the way. Learning his story and becoming an actor in his life only reinforced to me how incredibly fortunate I am to have the life I have.”

Clinics & the Community

Free legal clinics and community presentations are an essential resource to efficiently and effectively provide a large number of Idahoans with legal help and education. In 2018, with the help of Access to Justice Idaho, Idaho Legal Aid, DisAbility Rights Idaho, and the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program reached more than 4,600 people through free legal clinics and community presentations.

Breaking the Cycle

Stacy is a warm and vibrant single mom. She exudes energy; so much she literally seems to glow.

This wasn’t the case just a few years. Stacy lived in a cycle of abuse. She figured that the bad things that were happening to her were her own fault, that somehow she deserved it.

After a long struggle, that took so much time, strength, determination, and a network of community support, Stacy found Idaho Legal Aid. When Stacy was finally able to reach out for help, she was amazed by the services she received. When looking to the past, Stacy says, “It’s pretty wild to look back at this period of my life as it is so different. I didn’t know at the time I had a future before me in which I could live feeling capable, empowered, and peaceful.”
