Access to Justice Idaho

Access to Justice Idaho raises funds to support Idaho Legal Aid Services (ILAS), the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program (IVLP), and DisAbility Rights Idaho (DRI) — the three principal providers of civil legal services for poor and vulnerable Idahoans.  The need for free legal services is constant and increasing. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has left one in seven Idaho workers unemployed. Many who were seemingly secure, now face evictions, foreclosures, crippling medical bills without health insurance, and a myriad of unexpected legal problems.  This year, more than ever, the low-income beneficiaries of Access to Justice need your help.

Since 1968, Idaho Legal Aid Services (ILAS) has helped many thousands of Idahoans with critical legal problems. ILAS is a statewide program that provides free civil legal services to low income Idahoans. ILAS will use Access to Justice Idaho funds to serve 1) victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking, 2) persons facing eviction and homelessness, 3) guardianships/conservatorships to protect abused, neglected or abandoned children and adults who have lost capacity (often from Alzheimer’s or dementia), 4) seniors to obtain Medicaid to pay for long term care, and 5) low income Idahoans with other critical legal needs,  including those resulting from the pandemic.

For more than 25 years, the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program (IVLP) has been Idaho’s largest statewide pro bono program, providing legal services to approximately 2000 low-income Idahoans each year. IVLP works to close the justice gap in Idaho by providing pro bono attorneys to represent clients and operating monthly legal clinics where individuals may access free legal advice. IVLP will use Access to Justice Idaho funds to provide legal services that ensure the  health, safety and stability of individuals and families and that help people maintain and secure income and housing. Specifically, IVLP will assist victims of domestic violence with family law matters; protect children and adults from abuse, neglect and abandonment;  provide debt defense; and fight against evictions and for habitable housing.

DisAbility Rights Idaho has been helping Idahoans with disabilities since 1977. DisAbility Rights Idaho will use Access to Justice Idaho funds to help people with mental illnesses receive the support they need to avoid hospitalization, contest guardianships that are harmful, and help people with disabilities stay in their homes and communities.
