Coaches Needed for High School Mock Trial

Attorney coaches needed for several high school mock trial teams: Riverstone (Boise), Renaissance (Meridian), Wood River (Hailey), and Snake River Opportunities (Blackfoot).

Several Idaho schools are participating in the 2024 Idaho’s High School Mock Trial Competition and need an attorney or attorneys to help coach their teams from January to Mid-March.

Attorney coaches serves as consultants for teams, advising team members as they navigate the case materials and prepare for competition. Attorney coach tasks include:

  • Familiarizing yourself with the mock trial materials (including the case, the rules of competition, and the simplified rules of evidence).
  • Helping teams prepare opening and closing statements, direct and cross examination, and witness performance.
  • If possible, attending regional and (if qualified) state competitions with teams.

While the scheduling attorney coach time is upon mutual agreement between the attorney and the teacher-sponsor, attorney-coaches typically spend about 3 hours a week helping with mock trial teams. They meet with their teams once a week or once every other week either in person or on Zoom and are available to answer questions from the teacher and team members between meetings.

Attorneys can coach individually or can partner with other attorneys to form coaching teams. The Idaho Law Foundation’s Law Related Education Program will provide you with a coaching manual and training videos, and can connect you with other attorney coaches who can serve as mentors for newer attorney coaches.

Contact Carey Shoufler at cshoufler@isb.idaho.gov if you are interested or would like more information. Thank you for considering this opportunity.

Constitution Day is a federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution. It is normally observed on September 17, the day in 1787 that delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document. A law establishing the present holiday was created in 2004 and mandates that all publicly funded educational institutions provide educational programming about the Constitution on that day.

Attorneys for Civic Education was founded in 2013 by a group of Idaho attorneys who recognized the critical importance of civic education in Idaho’s schools. Uniting ACE members is a common vision: to increase and sustain opportunities for civic education in Idaho’s schools and ensure the Idaho youth have a solid understanding of the Constitution and the Rule of Law. Through outreach, fundraising, and other activities, ACE is committed to supporting quality civic education for Idaho’s young people. More information about ACE can be found at attorneysforciviceducation.org.

The Idaho Law Foundation is the charitable arm of the Idaho State Bar. As a program of the Foundation, Law Related Education is a statewide civic education program that works to enhance public understanding of the legal system and bring together attorneys and teachers to help students of all ages understand the role of law in a democratic society. 7th District Citizens’ Law Academy

7TH DISTRICT – IDAHO FALLS LOCATION
Fall 2023 Class

The Seventh District Bar Association of the Idaho State Bar is pleased to announce and open the
application process to accept students for this year’s 2023 Citizens’ Law Academy (CLA).
The CLA is an adult education program offered free to attendees and is coordinated by the Idaho
Law Foundation’s Law Related Education Program in collaboration with our Seventh District Bar
Association, which includes the following ten (10) counties: Bingham, Bonneville, Butte, Custer,
Jefferson, Madison, Clark, Fremont, Lemhi, and Teton Counties. The purpose of the CLA is to
educate others about their rights under the law, discover what lawyers do and how they serve the
public, and understand how the judicial system works.
The CLA is open to anyone eighteen (18) years or older who has a high level of interest in our
program. All applicants must fill out an application. Typically, thirty-five (35) people participate in
the Academy each year. The CLA program itself is staffed by volunteers from the legal
community. This year’s presenters include:

  1. Wendy Horman, Idaho House of Representatives – District 30, Seat B;
  2. Honorable Dane H. Watkins, Jr., Seventh Judicial District Administrative Judge;
  3. Tammie Whyte, Seventh Judicial District Trial Court Administrator;

The classes will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Idaho Falls, Idaho. The classes begin
on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, and will continue each Wednesday thereafter (no class will be
held on September 27, 2023) for a total of seven (7) classes, with the last class being held on
October 25, 2023. Because space is limited, participants are expected to attend all seven classes.
Refreshments are served after each class.

This is an exclusive and unique experience to learn from and discuss legal matters with some of the
most prominent judges and attorneys in the State of Idaho. All citizens of the 10 counties within the
