The seventh Denton Darrington Lecture on Law and Government is sponsored by the U of I College of Law, the McClure Center for Public Policy Research, the Idaho Supreme Court, and the Idaho State Bar. The keynote speaker is Harvard Business School Professor David Moss. Dr. Moss developed a case method course, the History of American Democracy, to help make complex concepts accessible to high school students and improve civic discourse. Dr. Moss’s remarks will consider how, after spreading rapidly in the late twentieth century, democracy has been on the defensive around the world – and arguably receding – in the twenty-first century. He will explore what’s happened, what it means, and what can be done, drawing especially on the history of democracy and past democratic breakdowns to help make sense of this tectonic shift and how it might be reversed.
