Renewal/Reinstatement of Limited License

Renewal of Limited License

The limited license may be renewed one time.  Renewal applications must be filed and the $25 application fee paid. It takes approximately two weeks for the Idaho State Bar to process a complete application.  It will take additional time at the Idaho Supreme Court before an order is issued.

Current Legal Interns Who Have Applied for the Bar Exam

A legal intern who has passed the Idaho Bar Exam will automatically have his/her license cancelled on the date of the admission ceremony.

A legal intern who failed the Idaho Bar Exam will have their limited license automatically cancelled on the date the results are released. If it is the first or second time the intern failed the Idaho Bar Exam, he/she will have 21 days to request reinstatement of his/her limited license.  Please note: a new application is not needed if the request for reinstatement is received within 21 days of the license cancellation.

To reinstate a limited license following failure of the bar exam:

  1. Submit a letter to the Idaho State Bar requesting your license be reinstated.
  2. Submit a letter from the supervising attorney informing us that he/she knows  the legal intern was unsuccessful in passing the bar exam and would like to remain the supervising attorney.
  3. Submit re-exam form and fee to take the next scheduled bar examination. (The reexamination application is included in the results packets mailed to the applicants the day the results are released.)

When the above three items are received and processed, the Idaho State Bar will notify the Idaho Supreme Court. The limited license will be reinstated upon the Court's order. Please allow three to five days for processing limited license reinstatements.

Legal Intern Applicants Who Have Already Failed a Bar Exam

Applicants who have failed one or two Idaho Bar Exams must include the following with their applications:

  1. Submit a letter from the supervising attorney saying that he/she is aware of the bar exam failure(s) and wishes to act as applicant’s supervising attorney.
  2. Submit verification that the applicant has applied for the next scheduled bar examination.
